Everything you Need to Know About KN95 Face Masks

Can face masks help slow the spread of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19? The answer is yes, FDA approved face masks with high filtration efficiency like the KN95 mask model, combined with other preventive measures, such as frequent hand-washing and social distancing, can potentially help slow the spread of the virus.

So, why weren’t face masks recommended at the start of the pandemic? Well, at that time experts didn’t know the extent to which people with COVID-19 could spread the virus before symptoms appeared. Nor was it known that some people have COVID-19 but don’t have any symptoms. Both groups can unknowingly spread the virus to others.

Now that months have passed since the global COVID-19 outbreak in March, and the end of this catastrophic pandemic is nowhere in sight, the demand for protective facial masks is on the rise again, especially after the WHO presented new preventive measures with masks as a necessity, leading people to look for the best mask options on the market.

A mask shouldn’t only be able to protect you from all the pollutant particles, bacteria, and viruses, but it also needs to be well-made and well-fitting to enhance its protective efficiency. One mask that has these characteristics is the KN95 face mask; a filtering respirator face mask that is currently used as a preventive measure for the pandemic.

Another well-known mask is the N95, which are made for the same reason as the NK95 but with some minor differences. What are the differences between KN95 and N95 face masks?

Face masks known as N95 and KN95 respirators are the common names for regulatory standards used to test their efficacy at filtering out at least 95% of very small particles. N95 is the standard used in the U.S., while KN95 refers to a standard in China. Both filter out most small particles and are similarly breathable, but KN95 typically use loops around the ears, while N95 masks use elastic bands stretched around the head.

Quick summary showing the qualities which the KN95 has:

  • KN95 stands for the regulatory standard for filtering facepiece respirators that are certified in China by the Chinese government under regulations GB2626-2006, GB262-2019, and GB19083-2010.

  • KN95 masks provide 95% protection against all particles that are greater than 0.3 µm in diameter (bacteria, viruses, pollution particles, fine particles, dust, smog, pollen, etc).

  • KN95 masks have a 3D foldable design, earloops, nose bridge/nose piece, and provide excellent fitting and sealing.

  • KN95 masks feature 5-layer protection, and are skin-friendly (don’t cause rash and skin irritation).

  • Currently approved by the WHO as a safety measure from COVID-19; used by healthcare providers, patients, and citizens.

  • Currently advised by the WHO for extended use and reuse.
