Helpful Tips to Protect Your Skin While Wearing a Mask

For many people outside the healthcare field, using a face mask is an entirely new experience. And now that in some places wearing a face mask in public areas is mandatory, we are detecting a rise in skin issues, particularly in the lower part of the face.

Face masks can potentially irritate your skin because they can trap sweat, oil, moisture, and dirt, and with autumn and the driest months of the year approaching, you may be at risk of experiencing dry skin, redness, irritation, and breakouts from your mask.

Skin side-effects of wearing a face mask:

  • Rashes from the friction of the face mask chafing against your skin.
  • Acne that has been aggravated by face coverings touching the skin.
  • Flare-ups of eczema and psoriasis.
  • Irritation and sores problems consequence of poorly made face masks or rough materials.
  • Some pores blocking and accumulations of sweat.

To prevent these skin issues, board-certified dermatologists recommend these tips:

Cleanse and moisturize your face daily: Gentle skincare can prevent skin problems. When washing your face, use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, and apply moisturizer immediately after washing it. Board-certified dermatologists recommend using a moisturizer with one of the following ingredients: Ceramides, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, which will help you get the most benefits.

Protect your lips by applying petroleum jelly: Dry skin and chapped lips are common face-mask skin problems. Prevent chapped lips using petroleum jelly on your lips after washing your face before putting on your mask, and before bed.

Wear the right mask: To reduce skin problems, look for masks that offer a snug, but comfortable fit; soft, natural, and breathable fabric, such as cotton; fabric on the inside that feels soft if you have sensitive skin; cotton material inside if you have acne or oily skin.

Take a 15-minute mask break every 4 hours: Healthcare workers on the coronavirus pandemic frontlines have found that this helps save their skin. Of course, only remove your mask when it’s safe to do so and after washing your hands.

Wash your cloth masks: most health care organizations now recommend that you wash a cloth mask after each use. Washing also removes oils and skin cells that collect inside the mask, leading to a skin problem. You can wash a cloth mask in a washing machine or by hand. Both ways remove germs and other particles.

If you notice sores, hives, or other more severe skin issues after wearing your mask, you should contact a dermatologist right away. For further information on wearing, making, or sterilizing facemasks, visit the CDC website for the latest guidelines.
